The holidays can be s stressful time. You’re trying to find the perfect gift, negotiate with relatives, and process the idea that our country is in a state of upheaval (aren’t you glad I reminded you?). There’s a lot of time spent  traveling aw well as time for panic attacks during holiday parties. Below are some suggestions for the best anxiety-reducing podcasts for the unhinged traveler, no matter what your interests are.

My Favorite Murder

If you have a strong stomach and punny sense of humor, My Favorite Murder is the podcast for you. True crime nerds across the internet are overjoyed about comedy duo Georgia Hardstark and Karen Kilgariff’s sharp storytelling skills. Each week they discuss two different murders, cracking jokes and talking feminist politics along the way. One of their most powerful discussions didn’t even mention murder, but centered around the male entitlement and sheer violence that births a man like Brock Turner. They’re sharp, passionate, hilarious, and definitely worth listening to.

Still Processing

fullsizerender-2

By far one of the best new podcasts of 2016, The New York Times’ Jenna Wortham and Wesley Morris take on pop culture each week in a fabulously new and interesting way. They go on field trips, dissect the sociological implications of the art they consume, and, of course, revel in their own friendship. By far two of the brightest minds working today, Wortham an Morris have an easy rapport that makes the listener feel like they’re chatting in a cafe with two close friends. The pair works hard to keep this dynamic, and even lets the listener in on extremely emotional experiences, like their reactions to the election of Donald Trump, during which they each broke down in tears. Not only do they let us in on their emotional experiences, they dissect their meaning as well, prompting the listener to investigate their own feelings, all in the name of art.

Last Podcast on the Left

screen-shot-2016-12-04-at-6-19-47-pm

Last Podcast on the Left is where you should go if you’re looking for the lighter side of conspiracies, alien abductions, serial killers, and the supernatural. Hosted by Marcus Parks, Been Kissel, and Henry Zebrowski, this often disgusting and equally hilarious podcast will make you question everything and everyone around you while laughing your ass off. The humor can be a little bro-y from time to time but it’s like the kind of bro who’s also really into Lord of the Rings, lovably offensive. The fact that they cater to many interests is a big plus and their thorough research makes each episode all the more compelling.

Lady Problems

mgid-ao-image-mtv

Lady Problems deserves to be heard round the world.. The MTV news-sponsored podcast takes a look at how pop culture is treating women each week and, as they would say, “it’s usually terribly.” They interview interesting women, talk politics, and solve a different Lady Problem each week. The rotating cast of ladies, anchored by Teo Bugbee and Rachel Handler, is always charming ad insightful. Their interview with Muslim Girl founder Amani Al-Khatahtbeh in particular is a gem in the series’ crown, highlighting the reality of being a Muslim woman in an America that elected Trump.

Code Switch

wubpu46s

NPR’s Code Switch is another podcast that should be required listening for all  Americans, especially as the new administration draws near. Hosted by Gene Demby and Shereen Marisol Meraj, the podcast examines issues at the intersection of race and identity. The rapport between them will leave you at ease and ready to learn at the beginning of each episode and their interviews are always comprehensive and well thought-out. It’s funny and thought-provoking and will teach you something new every episode, especially if, like me, you’re full of white privilege and looking to do better.
